Dilution & Molarity Calculator

Bench calculators for preparing solutions. Use C₁V₁=C₂V₂ to work out how much stock and diluent to combine, or the molarity calculator to convert between mass, molecular weight, volume and concentration.

Prepare a diluted solution

Use the same concentration unit for C₁ and C₂ (e.g. M, mg/mL, %).

Take stock (V₁)
10 mL
Add diluent
90 mL
to reach 100 mL total

The formulas

Dilution
C₁ × V₁ = C₂ × V₂  →  V₁ = (C₂ × V₂) / C₁
Molarity
M = mass(g) / MW(g/mol) / volume(L)

Frequently asked questions

How does the C₁V₁ = C₂V₂ dilution formula work?+

Concentration × volume is conserved on dilution. To reach a final concentration C₂ in volume V₂ from stock C₁, take V₁ = (C₂ × V₂) ÷ C₁ of stock and add diluent up to V₂. Use the same concentration unit for C₁ and C₂.

How do I calculate molarity?+

Molarity (mol/L) = mass (g) ÷ molecular weight (g/mol) ÷ volume (L). This tool can also solve the reverse — the mass to weigh out for a target molarity, MW and volume.

What concentration units can I use for dilution?+

Any, as long as C₁ and C₂ share the same unit — molar (M), mg/mL, %, X-fold, etc. The result volumes are in whatever volume unit you pick.
